Never without my Moleskine
What is the common point between Van Gogh and Hemingway ? They both had their Moleskine with them around the clock. That’s how the small notebook became legendary. That faithful egghead’s and boho’s fellow welcomes every artist’s inspiration, no matter if anonymous or renowed, young or old.
Who would have ever thought that such a pocket-notebook - now sold at 18 $ - would that be successful?
Few pages marked with lined paper - or without -, a thin leather book cover, a sewed spine so that it remains flat when the notebook is opened, and a rubber band to keep it closed…
Besides the numerous literary benchmarks referring the Moleskine, it seems they are priceless because they became unobtainable for many years. In 1986, the little family business based in Tours (France) which manufactured it disappeared definitively… until the Italian firm Modo & Modo brought the famous notebook back !
According to Wikipedia, in 2006, within the frame of a business expansion, the copycat firm proceeded to find a commercial partner. In August 2006, the French bank Société générale bought out Modo & Modo for 92 million USD. No more than 5 million notebooks to sell, so that the buyer exactly breaks even.
