1. What does being cult really mean ?

   Cult: “Deep admiration, passion for someone or something”.

   Some sentences have traveled through the ages, some melodies are in every heads, and some items will never be out of fashion. This is what being cult is about ! It means staying in people’s mind, so strongly that a mere scrabble or humming makes you think about it again, like a common cultural reference. Being cult means inspire, making you desire, being able to move crowds, being a bestseller all over the years or being a hit on screen…

   Is it cult for everybody? Not always! If what is really cult is international and travels through generations, we could never avoid having a neighbor that doesn’t own a TV, a cousin who has been living abroad or parents that did not really had the same values as we have… But there is a common point in all that: you! You may not know such singer or item but your colleague, your mother, your second cousin or your boss probably heard about it. Also, if something is cult for you it is probably cult for one or two or 10 or even 100 000 other people as well.

   If it is cult, you have to have heard about it and you’ll probably find it here during the coming months. And if the ultimate reference dares not to appear in our selection, tell us, we’ll be able to repair the damage!

2. Culture-Culte: the challenge

   A challenge? Yes! The authors-builders challenged themselves in order to spice the adventure a bit: « Gather 999 cult objects, creations and people in one year! »

   The rules are simple. After a few months of training the counter starts on March, 11 2008 until March, 11 2009. Everything is allowed: episode articles, sagas, articles on groups of items, creations or artists. The only rule is to explain why such a subject is classified as cult.

3. Categories

   To be as clear as possible, we have classified the “items” in 10 categories: movies, internet, literature, yum yum, fashion, music, objects, ads, technologys, TV. The keywords also help us to suggest alternative sorting.

   Have a nice surf!

   Movies	We all have cult movies. Not always the same ones! This category would fill an entire website by itself but we’re gonna start with some very-well known (or not) titles.
   Internet	Internet, cult items accelerator! An ad spreading like a bolt of lightning, a very nice video cast, a reference website? If you enjoy surfing the web, you’ll find the last buzz here and the incontrovertible actors that you probably already met. Nice discussion subjects to come.
   Literature	Comics, novels, guides, magazines… In short, everything that has words added to each other with comas and points in between: if it is popular, we take it! Come and tell us about your favorite book, we’ll write about it!
   Yum Yum	It is high-quality and is eaten even when you’re not hungry! From mars bars to coca-cola we want it again and again and even dream about it!
   Fashion	So fashion! Vintage brands, haute couture, fashion is the one industry full of treasures of references. If a cap, a jacket or shoes make more than 10 000 collectors dream, it has to be found here!
   Music	Well known music used in ads or movies, good old funk that makes everybody move, the last commercial melody so kitsch that we’ll remember it, the electro acid trance about to revolutionize the dance-floor… We’re gonna talk about it!
   Items	Cars, games, machines, inventions, sculptures, paintings, design… All these creations that we crave to possess one of these days are in this category.
   Advertising	Advertisement! A tune, a gimmick that engraves itself in memories, images that suggest a brand or idea without a single word… From antiquity to web 2.0, there’s a lot to talk about…
   Technology	Technology doesn’t always mean High Tech products that just came out. Remember your old Amiga computer. Wasn’t it just the ultimate product? Today’s just the same with a Wii or a Nespresso coffee machine. Come on; let’s discuss the newbies and oldies of technology. I can already feel the emotion!
   TV	TV, the good friend that raised us, the one that taught us everything… Time has come to pay tribute to it! Zapping to come…
